It has been made mandatory to have PhD for promotions to the Grades of Associate Professor/Professor. With about 34,000 technical colleges, the requirement of PhD holders is too huge and we produce a limited no. of PhDs every year.Without realizing this limitation, there seems to be no point in making too many comments about shortage of faculty. To over come such shortage, why not we look for taking Qualified, experienced professional with an aptitude for teaching from Industry as Professers?

In many of the Western countries, it is mandatory to have about 5 years working experience in Industry for teaching in Technical colleges. This experience will help them in imparting certain practical aspects to the students. We may explore the possibility of introducing such requirement for at least 25% of the faculty, which will also help in overcoming the shortages of teaching faculty.

While the the teachers have the necessary Qualifications in many of the Professional Colleges and they have adequate professional knowledge (theoretical) to teach, most of them are seen to be lacking the skills to teach, which is resulting in poor Quality of Teaching. Hence, to improve such skills, it should be made mandatory for the professional college teachers also to get themselves Qualified in Teaching Methodology Course with a duration of about six months like that for school teachers.

Teachers are very valuable for any student .Teachers must give proper guidance to the students. Teachers must be answerable for the correction of papers they do. Teachers must be discouraged to play divide and rule politics with the students. Teachers caught in such act such as divide and rule politics must be punished .

The Central Govt. should seriously think of bringing in faculty from Canada and U.K. for the first few years of professionalising B.Ed- making it a three years course instead of the present 1 year, and include the duration of three to 5 years for those interested in obtaining B.Ed degree. All B.Ed degrees awarded through correspondence/ distance education should be treated as 'not recognised for appointment as teacher' in a recognised govt. or recognised private school.

Teaching must be seen as a serious profession, just like Medical, Law, or Chartered Accountancy. I suggest the following for producing teachers of high calibre. 1. Make B.Ed into a three years course after B.A./ B.Com/ B.Sc Hons., or into a five years B.A.,B.Ed/ B.Sc, B.Ed/ B.Com, B.Ed course with no option to withdraw after three years and take a B.A., B.Sc, B.Com degree without B.Ed. 2. Conduct an All India Test for Education for all central universities and Regional Institutes of Education

Our education system must instill the thought that teaching is a service than an job. The teachers must be properly recognized and awarded for their selfless service and must be paid sufficiently. All teachers should volunteer for educating kids in remote location and their volunteer service should be used as one of the criterion for promotion. Teachers must be equipped with gadgets like "Kindle" to learn on their own, they must discuss in forums and provide their views and suggestions.
