India has a long tradition of excellence in making handloom products with extraordinary skills and craftsmanship. 44 lakh weavers are engaged in this activity, out of which 78% are women.

By the Handlooms (Reservation of Articles for production) Act, 1985, the Central Government has reserved articles or class of articles for exclusive production of handlooms for the protection and development of the handloom industry.
Further to this effort, the Ministry of Textiles launched “Handloom Mark” scheme with effect from 28.06.2006 for promoting and preserving the Indian handloom products and securing a premium position in the domestic as well as international market. This provides a collective identity to the handloom products of India for popularizing the hand woven products originating from the handloom sector. Thus, the Handloom Mark does not necessarily guarantee a bench mark quality for the product, but ensures only the origin of the product.

Though the weavers produce rich variety of designs and textures, there is not much emphasis on the quality of the product due to various reasons. Experience of implementing Handloom Mark in the past years indicate that this has served the limited purpose of production of cloth by handlooms and not been able to address the quality related parameters which are integral for development of handloom as a niche product.

It is stressed on the need to produce a fabric “with no defect and no effect on environment” and develop “Indian Handlooms” brand for assuring quality products meeting social and environmental compliances.

Online shopping with free delivery charges throughout India. handlooms products with Govt certified for purity and quality has to be sold online. As per me many foreigners have immense likes towards our handlooms. We can have these products with Govt certified symbol sold at airports and very important Bus and Railway stations, tourist places with Duty free option sold to attract buyers. International exporting has to be done directly by government by buying it form local vendors.

Online buying facilities should be available throughout the country with free of cost shipping charge with the use of Indian Postal Service. The government should buy from the producers at a equilibrium price and can sell it with charging some tax so as to get profit. Exportation to abroad should also be taken care of. Shipping should be cheap and the product should be of a remarkable quality.

Best of the breed ecom site and mobile app would widen the market reach. It would be good to have a nation wide design team to circulate disigns with Khadi makers.

Please link Khadi Design efforts with NIFT and make sure we deploy grads from NIFT to the purpose. NIFT students can come up with fresh thoughts/designs and improve quality.

Sir, most often the reason we fall short is because of lack of consistent quality & designing. If we have a standardisation & designing board for traditional looms, it will help the weavers get input for colors & designs, newer products from traditional looms - table linen, upholstery etc. We should encourage foreign design houses to have units in India through "Make in India" mode. Tax breaks can be given to design houses using handloom. Direct selling, co-operative hubs & e-retail need study.

This can be easily done by adding a touch of trendy fashion to the traditional sarees and other apparel. I'm sure people would love to buy, I will!

we must focus on Best QUALITY,BEST Finish product, Best packaging, and 'ON TIME delivery'. China is falling behind because they have poor quality, poor commitment for the delivery though they have good packaging. Look at Germany, Japan for their quality/LONG LASTING products, and watch Korea and Vietnam in next 2-3 years so India has the room to grow if we do things RIGHT. Jai Hind
