Although Indian Railways enjoy the highest captive eyeballs in a railway system internationally, it earns less than 5% of its revenues through non-tariff sources. Many of the world railway systems generate 10% to 20% of their revenues from non-tariff sources.

IR typically has focused on increasing revenues through tariff hikes. It wants to change this and challenge the conventional thinking by exploiting new sources of revenue so that every asset, tangible or non-tangible, gets optimally monetized

We invite ideas from citizens on increasing non fare revenue for Indian Railways.

Almost every possibility is expressed by participants, but nothing can be fruitful until lack of determination and honesty shall prevail in HR of railways, or for that purpose, of any organization.

Change management practices to the most modern by involving employees to suggest cost cutting measures in their own and other work areas and invite employees sugestions to improve profits & reduce cost. Also employ world class management practices like Total Productive Maintainance (TPM) and Six Sigma to improve efficiency & profit, reduce wastages.Training should be given & new fresh talent to be introduced to bring in the change. Retire old staff (VRS) who are likely to resist change.

1.Station name should be displayed by electronic display inside the all coaches because passengers are hard to know the station name particularly during night time 2.Auto closure in waste outlet should be implemented during stoping at stations. 3.Gardening at stations and tree plantations along the entire track is to be made so the passengers can enjoy pleasant journey during summer 4.Private advertisement inside the coaches can be increased for higher non fare income to the railways

Introduce automated ticket scanner and gate at the entrance of the rail platform. This should allow only passengers with valid ticket into the platform. Avoids ticketless passengers to some extent. Similarly scanners at the exit from platform should check if the ticket is until that station. This may prevent fraud to a large extent and reduce the revenue leak.

Like in airplanes airhostess brings the cart to every passenger for shopping, a "railhostess" sells travel essentials and branded products to the passengers. Profit has to be maximised by negotiating the price with the suppliers, still selling at lesser than the market price.

1. In Singapore train fare is very affordable to everyone, yet they make good money. This is because every train station has a shopping mall with food courts, shopping centers, multi storeyed parking spaces etc. Huge Digital advertisement boards are everywhere that grabs the attention of every passer by and charges a premium to the business houses. Digital and aesthetically appealing print advertisements are allowed on the platforms and inside the cabins too.
