Farmers take loans for farming. When due to some unforeseen circumstances or due to natural calamities, the crop is damaged and farmers are not able to repay the loans. Many farmers are not able to bear this loss and take the extreme step of committing suicide. PMFBY is an crop insurance scheme and already claims worth more than 1lakh crores have been settled. Still there are enough scope to expand the reach of this scheme and bring more farmers under this umbrella. This can be achieved through IEC (Information, Education and Communication). Posters and banners can be put in banks and in public places in simple words about the benefits of scheme, enrolment procedure, eligibility criteria, claim procedure etc. Panchayats can do this activity quite effectively. They can arrange some gatherings in villages and representatives from insurance companies can be called to educate the farmers.
