Examination reforms that focus on problem-solving, critical thinking and reasoning skills are critical to improving quality at the secondary level. Such reforms will change the teaching–learning processes and improve learning outcomes. In recent years, CBSE has introduced wide-ranging examination reforms in schools affiliated to it, such as Class X Board Examination has been made optional, Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) has been strengthened so that the students, are assessed on an ongoing basis for their holistic development, a system of grading in place of marks has been introduced. The objectives are to look at the existing systems and suggest reforms which would help better assessment of students.

We need to choose between degree/certificates and education. If we want to score high as a country of highest number of school certificate holders, then compulsory promotion system is the way to go. On the other hand if we want to become a country of educated people, we need to have stricter evaluation standards so as to ensure quality of education.

Due to compulsory promotion system till Class VIII, neither the learners nor the teachers are serious about studies . In fact many of the students who are being promoted to Class IX hardly know 3Rs. In Govt. schools the students are being exposed to this system, not in the private schools. Hence to qualify for the higher class, obtaining a minimum number should be made compulsory.

The present examination system is not properly, both students and teachers have casual approach. So there must be change in the examination pattern. Better have the earlier system with questions to test the higher order thinking skills

instead of present bunch system of subjects, basket system of subject in which a student can choose each and every subject should be implemented. zero failure policy should be done away with. students who perform excellently in sports should be evaluated in those sports only instead on evaluating them in maths/physics etc. instead of teaching too many contents in a year, limited contents with thorough knowledge should be tought.

Despite CCE, curricular activities still conducted as eyewash by teachers taking orals all in one day, allowing ready made commercial projects , granting higher marks to commercially made projects. Insecurity for job retention plagues teachers and they allow students to cheat to display good result to retain job. Central Govt schools like KVs teachers are giving private coaching and tired in school. They are not dedicated.Lack of transparency and parents who complain are harassed.

Examination oriented system should be done away with. Application based system with process focus approach rather than product focus would bring about tangible changes to the current mediocre system.

Present examination system needs modification in order to make it more beneficial for students who are next generation citizens(1)board exams are a must ,no pressure no stress no future citizens,(2) it must not be just responsibility of teacher to make pass a student.(3) teacher must be assessed by his honest efforts of of teaching not by result.(4) two formative assessment should be be taken of max weight 20 percent.
