The country is well endowed with many metallic and non-metallic mineral resources.  India is a leading player in respect of many non fuel minerals including, iron ore, bauxite, dolomite, lime stone and mica.  Mining sector (non-fuel) currently accounts for approx 0.5% of GDP.  For accelerated economic growth on sustainable basis, this sector has to grow at a much faster pace to secure   a higher percentage in the GDP.

Scientific, sustainable and transparent mining practices require well trained manpower.  Skill development not only enhances productivity and safety at work place, but more importantly, it prepares the manpower to adapt to the new state of art technologies. Currently this sector employs around 0.2 Million workforce which is estimated to grow to 0.3 Million in next 10 years.

First of all, mining labour should be talked to. We should listen to their complaints and suggestions, because they are the best judge of their issues. Only after sincere and honest discussions with them, it should be decided that their skill development exercise should be given to whom.

The kind of economic reforms we talk about sitting at Raisina Hills or Nariman Point may not be of too much relevance to the people living say in Eastern UP or Bihar. To improve the lives of these people, we need to find local solutions. See some suggestions at www.investrekk.com

skill development exercise in mining sector be undertaken by the private sector . It will be done in more professional manner. Govt. mining sector should generate funds / revenue & survive on it like private sector.Govt Funding should be stopped.
