Dear Prime Minister, In this edition of "Mann Ki Baat," I would like to highlight the Sourashtra community's handloom industry. Our weaving tradition, which began with King Tirumalai Nayak, is renowned for its silk fabrics. Historically celebrated for their silk weaving skills, Sourashtra weavers were invited by the Vijayanagar Empire's kings to settle in Hampi and later continued their craft under the Nayak kings of Thanjavur and Madurai. Today, many of us still engage in handloom silk saree production, though there is a shift towards other fabrics due to Western influences. I observed disappointing sales at a local shop,in and around Madurai reflecting a decline in interest in our traditional craft. I hope to reignite interest and support for our weavers, which will boost their business and preserve our cultural heritage.
