Although Indian Railways enjoy the highest captive eyeballs in a railway system internationally, it earns less than 5% of its revenues through non-tariff sources. Many of the world railway systems generate 10% to 20% of their revenues from non-tariff sources.

IR typically has focused on increasing revenues through tariff hikes. It wants to change this and challenge the conventional thinking by exploiting new sources of revenue so that every asset, tangible or non-tangible, gets optimally monetized

We invite ideas from citizens on increasing non fare revenue for Indian Railways.

Unused railways lands can be utilized for land filling of the sorted/segregated garbage of all cities, which can reduce the waste drastically, and in the future the decomposed garbage/waste can be used as manure for the fields.Suggestions from Swach Bharat discussions can be clubbed with this to promote clean-up drive and also by funding to the start-up companies by providing necessary training and tools,so that it will generate employment, this will benefit both Indian Railways and our country.

Make the ticket with QR code. Scan and get access to the railway station and for exist too ( just like metro). In this way, very less number of people will be traveling without tickets. I still found TT takes too much of bribe. Eliminate such TC's. They don't have fear of getting caught and fired.

Allow people to buy a volume of certain weight in the trains which have capacity to haul some more goods. The available volume and weight which can be booked on the train can be advertised on a site in real time. the railways have to make sure that goods booked like this gets cleared very quickly so that people can develop services around the speed of the service and there is incentive to book the space on the railways. The handling of goods booked should be handled very quickly by automation et

1. Indian Railway (IR) can start the movers and packers facility. If I want to move from Chennai to Mumbai, I would prefer IR. 2. IR can have more kiosk for tickets at every railway station. We wont have to stand in queue. We will be saving huge amount of salary. ( I found this in San Fransisco, US. You go to any railway station, you have to take tickets from the kiosk box only) 3. Automate all the manual jobs. Platform cleaning, use more machinery.

Many of the world railway systems generate 10% to 20% of their revenues from non-tariff sources... Then to compete world wide... we have to provide services like rest of the world... first let us build services like rest of the world for our railways... then we can think of raising fares through non tariff ways.

The seats & sleepers that are now made from wood can be replaced with recylced plastics(thermosetting).this will not only prevent upake of wood but also help reducing plastic disposal both will reduce environment degradation.secondly to prevent people from traveling without tickets, the doors may be fitted with some Sensors which opens the door only when valid tickets are scanned in it.This will prevent accidents & entry of people involved in theft too.
