Although Indian Railways enjoy the highest captive eyeballs in a railway system internationally, it earns less than 5% of its revenues through non-tariff sources. Many of the world railway systems generate 10% to 20% of their revenues from non-tariff sources.

IR typically has focused on increasing revenues through tariff hikes. It wants to change this and challenge the conventional thinking by exploiting new sources of revenue so that every asset, tangible or non-tangible, gets optimally monetized

We invite ideas from citizens on increasing non fare revenue for Indian Railways.

1. Railway roof should be used to generate Solar Energy. Further, all the platform should compulsory go for Solar Power. 2. All the major station have ample space. Government should opt for PPP model and develop the left out space as 2/3 star hotels. It will be beneficiary for both travelers & Government. Travelers to be given discount if they book the hotel at the time of train ticket itself. 3. If ample space is not available then it should be converted to banquet hall

General Parking at New Delhi Railway Station at Ajmeri gate (Near Auto Pre paid booth) does not provide receipts for parking. A general receipt is provided at entry which is taken away at exit along with parking fare. All parking payments are in cash. When I requested for online, attendant said that it cannot be online. There seems to be no government agency in-charge of parking lot management. No accountability, no rate displays. corrupt practices can be curbed thru online system.

In cities like Mumbai there is shortage of space. Many travelers come to station with their vehicles. These vehicles need to park from 9.00 to 18.00 hrs. Many stations like Santacruz /Vileparle commuters park outside the station and pay money. This space is blocked for any use/create conjunction (Kurla). We can have suburban railway stations have strong roof structure and utilize same as parking space for vehicles with nominal charges for parking. The Traveler shall happily pay this money.

Non fare revenue can be increased by advertisements and sponsored movies in trains. You don't get the basic announcements which can be easily sponsored by companies. If things like water can be sponsored by some companies free to public,it will be good for public and give ad revenue to Railways.

UPA Government promised drinking water to all passengers @ Re.1 per liter bottle. This was done about 4 to 5 years back. Even now, there is no such facility for this basic amenity. For meals, lesser said the better. We used to get a meal for Rs.50 to 70 which included rice, chapati, vegetable, curd, salad, papad and sweet dish. Now meal cost is Rs 90 which excludes salad, curd ,papad and sweet dish,Effectiv cost is now Rs 150 or more. Therefore need of the hour is an affordable and reasonable meal

I feel advertisement is one of the cost effective step, govt should take. You can sold advertisements in various form. 1. Sell decent advertisements on back side of tickets. 2. In premium trains sell advertisements in above passengers seats. 3. Outer side of the express trains can also be used to sell advertisement. 4. T.V/LED can be installed in platforms, where advertisement can be sold. These media player can also be used for notification/information display. Regards, Vikram
