Although Indian Railways enjoy the highest captive eyeballs in a railway system internationally, it earns less than 5% of its revenues through non-tariff sources. Many of the world railway systems generate 10% to 20% of their revenues from non-tariff sources.

IR typically has focused on increasing revenues through tariff hikes. It wants to change this and challenge the conventional thinking by exploiting new sources of revenue so that every asset, tangible or non-tangible, gets optimally monetized

We invite ideas from citizens on increasing non fare revenue for Indian Railways.

the problem with trains is they are not that accessible and readily available as buses, like buses have instant booking mode, some changes can be brought in similar way so railways can increase general bogies for middle n low class passengers, bookings which can be opened on same day of journey (from morning 10am upto 1 hr before chart preparation), and tickets should be issued only at booking counters to avoid malpractice or frauds.. this can increase common man access and travel optn to train

India has a huge railway network with a total 1.2 lakhs kilometer of railway track. subsequently i personal opinion to increase non fare revenue for indian railway is by laying optical fibre through out its railway network and addtiional fibre for commercial which will be not in the Railway network. it will run thorugh its own Optical distribution frames. .... leasing this fibre for commercials will lead to much addition in non-fare revenues for indian railway.
