The formulation of a new National Footwear Policy has become imperative. Footwear products—which traditionally fell under the purview of the Commerce Department—are now intrinsically linked to the Textile and Chemical sectors as well. Therefore, a collaborative effort involving the Commerce, Textile, and Chemical departments must be intensified within the footwear manufacturing sector. Key areas requiring focused attention include expediting business clearances for footwear manufacturers, ensuring the welfare of workers involved in the production of footwear and its raw materials, and upholding environmental protection standards. Given that BIS certification has been made mandatory for footwear, it is essential to formulate a new policy framework and establish joint working groups comprising representatives from the Ministries of Commerce, Textiles, and Chemicals.
