Section 161 of Railway act indicates “If any person driving or leading a vehicle is negligent in crossing an unmanned level crossing, he shall be punishable with imprisonment which may extend to one year.”

Section 131 of the Motor Vehicle Act indicates that “Every driver of a motor vehicle at the approach of any unguarded railway level crossing shall cause the vehicle to stop and the driver of the vehicle shall cause the conductor or cleaner or attendant or any other person in the vehicle to walk up to the level crossing and ensure that no train or trolley is approaching from either side and then pilot the motor vehicle across such level crossing, and where no conductor or cleaner or attendant or any other person is available in the vehicle, the driver of the vehicle shall get down from the vehicle himself to ensure that no train or trolley is approaching from either side before the railway track is crossed”

However due to non-following of relevant rules by the road users, many accidents are occurring resulting in loss of precious life  at unmanned level crossings.

Suggest solutions for reducing accidents at unmanned level crossings.

We need to target to increase Railway lines by 3 times within a period of 10 years. This not only brings down Road traffgic, but also reduces lot of petroleum consumption in India, which is playing key role in inflation and Rupee valuation in international market. Separate line shall be made for Goods Trains, which makes Goods Transport faster.

Motion sensors and Red light could be used and this would be cheeper as well. Before crossing at a safe distance a motion sensor could be installed to detect the motion of train going towards crossing and send a signal to a red light installed at crossing. Similarly another sensor could be installed after crossing which will switch off the when train will move away of crossing. So each crossing can be made safe at the expense of hardly Rs. 25000 and this includes motion sensor, light, solar cel

It is shameful for us Indians to have so many unmanned crossings even 67 years after Independence. We need to invest heavily in infrastructure. It should be top priority.Look at DUBAI.They have gone for focussed investment in infrastructure. All companies & persons involved are Indians.

PWD/CPWD should make a series of speed breaker on the road. firstly to make speed down and a data should be provided to train pilot about unmanned level crossing so that he/she can blow the horn to penetrate well packed car or bus . and the most important about DESIGNING OF TRACK OVER THE ROAD , SO THAT IN CAUSE THESE ALL WARNING IS JUMPED BY DRIVER OF vehicle , it don't struck in between the track that mostly happen in general cause

Railway may start to put signals intended to caution those who cross the railway line just before a train arrive. The signal shall be equipped with green and red light and produce voice or sound to caution. The signal shall operate in a similar way of the railway traffic signals. These signal shall be placed both sides of the lines, facing the pedestrians and vehicles at their eye level.Signal can also be operated using remote sensors.
