With a dramatic growth in elementary education enrolments and improvements in retention and transition rates in recent years, particularly amongst the more disadvantaged groups, there is an increasing pressure on the secondary schools to admit more students. With the enforcement of RTE Act and further improvement in retention and transition rates, demand for secondary schooling will grow rapidly in the coming years. The objective of this discussion group is to assess to what extent we have made quality education available, accessible and affordable to the target population in the age group of 14–18 years. How we can increase access to post elementary education across the country in a manner so as to ensure no child is denied the opportunity of completing his/her school education. In particular, how can we address the geographical and social disparities in secondary education?

1. The most important fact is until laboring parents won't get a strong reason for the need of education they would employ their children @ a tea shop or @ a factory. 2. Applications of every topic, every subject must be clearly mentioned to students. for ex. Until there's no clear target you don't choose a path. 3. Most important is to advertise implementations & applications of topics taught in Secondary & Sr. Secondary education. 4. Remove HW burden so that students would think new ideas.

This, apart from setting up technical institutions like IIT's, NIT's etc . for B.Tech degree holders, making career more lucrative for persons from other backgrounds like humanities. Alternative career options should be made available by the government for persons possessing special skills like painters, writers (including legal draftsmen). This would help truly realize the potential of the youth. Give them decent employment opportunities as envisaged in article 41 of the constitution and

Teachers should hold counselling sessions with parents apprising him of child's performance and suggesting alternative career options for their ward. They should hold the parents into confidence for alternative career options other than the conventional options of Doctors and Engineers. Further, the government should open up more career avenues at the career carving level.

For example if a child is doing better in humanities like history, civics and polity he may be encouraged to take up that stream after class VIII. Similarly if a child is excelling in English the child may given a specialization in that subject after class VIII and encouraged to become a writer. This will be the true realization of a child's potential, increase his efficiency and lessen the unnecessary burden on him.

All subjects should be taught up-to class VIII so that the child inculcates and completes the basic education and later the child may be encouraged to take up subjects of his interest which may later help to carve his career in future. This may be done seeing to the child's performance in various subjects and interest and also by a frank discussion by the teacher with his parents.

As during the past few months there has been and rightly so great stress on skill development, it should also reflect in school education for preparing the youth for better career and job opportunities in the future. It requires a holistic approach and a paradigm shift in pattern of school education.
