India has a long tradition of excellence in making handloom products with extraordinary skills and craftsmanship. 44 lakh weavers are engaged in this activity, out of which 78% are women.

By the Handlooms (Reservation of Articles for production) Act, 1985, the Central Government has reserved articles or class of articles for exclusive production of handlooms for the protection and development of the handloom industry.
Further to this effort, the Ministry of Textiles launched “Handloom Mark” scheme with effect from 28.06.2006 for promoting and preserving the Indian handloom products and securing a premium position in the domestic as well as international market. This provides a collective identity to the handloom products of India for popularizing the hand woven products originating from the handloom sector. Thus, the Handloom Mark does not necessarily guarantee a bench mark quality for the product, but ensures only the origin of the product.

Though the weavers produce rich variety of designs and textures, there is not much emphasis on the quality of the product due to various reasons. Experience of implementing Handloom Mark in the past years indicate that this has served the limited purpose of production of cloth by handlooms and not been able to address the quality related parameters which are integral for development of handloom as a niche product.

It is stressed on the need to produce a fabric “with no defect and no effect on environment” and develop “Indian Handlooms” brand for assuring quality products meeting social and environmental compliances.

Promotion of handloom industry is the need of the hour.To help it survive and sustain what can be done is:1)Create a brand by GOI and give tax exumptions.2)Bring in modern methods of manufacturing at the same time maintain its traditionality 3)Incorporate modern contemporary designs with the traditionally available ones to make it more appealing.4)Promote handloom products in the international market and boost their sales.5)start Indian handicrafts and handloom based courses in all colleges.

To promote Indian Handlooms as a brand and to ensure quality products to the consumers, I suggest that all Municipal Schools, aided schools could be taken as centres for Sale of these goods. Not only handlooms, handicrafts, KVIC products and other rural artefacts could be displayed there and sold to masses. I suggested this to KVIC Director in Mumbai but it boomeranged as he is asking me to fix up with schools and being a Sr.Citizen I could not attend to his request. Govt. can do it.

In my opinion, to promote Indian Hand-loom as brand and create market for them, the first step in today's digital world is to create an online portal for sellers where they can display their products, quote their price, track their orders. Where they can access buyers not only in India but around the world. Second step is to create mobile app for them just like flipkart, homeshop18 etc.

The various business modules like B2B, B2C and others should be tried out and not just channeled through a few. Societies should be formed after recognizing place specific or sector specific in different parts in India, it will be for the greater good

Indian handloom has potential for growth in international markets, with KHADI as the biggest homegrown handloom brand, new type of handloom stuff like cloths, silk etc can be brought into the focus, by alloting the Handloom franchises to the general public on tender invite basis, this will help generate revenue & also will help in making the homegrown handloom popular. Moreover 2 international handloom festivals should be held every year in different international venues to showcase our work.

Government has to open a shopping complex at every tourist spot.Local people, only, who depend on selling handicrafts, handloom have to register here&permitted to sell there. Govt.has to give Income Tax (IT) exemption to expenditure made on purchasing,by tourists, above items. For this,Every tourist spot should have separate website &all transactions& details of buyer should be included in the site. When tourists submit IT returns, IT department can cross-check details with websites.

Hand-loom makers are to be educated for online trading and like OLX and flip kart the user and manufacturer can be linked via Govt. Website

Hand loom category to be earmarked by indexing. Some may use Khadi yarn for handloom whereas majority use yarn manufactured by machine. Furnishing materials products like Bed sheet on handloom can have maximum 140 cm width with 6 thread per cm. Width depends on thread work. Carpets has a different way of weaving and some cases the one across is inserted as in the case of mat etc. Surcharge on textiles not wider than a specific category. Handloom can be chosen for school & Attendent uniform

Best way to promote is to make handloom products tax free to make them competitive with other things and open some centers for their sales in major cities.

1. Govt initiative - give tax benefits to the industry that utilizes handloom fabric. 2. Brand creation - tie up with NIFT / NID etc to create modern designs for the clothes, and make the design available for manufacturing at a nominal cost. 3. Use celebrities and designers to promote Indian handloom fabrics on a regular basis - Lakme fashion week / other fashion shows - and have handloom week celebrated in Bollywood
