India has a long tradition of excellence in making handloom products with extraordinary skills and craftsmanship. 44 lakh weavers are engaged in this activity, out of which 78% are women.

By the Handlooms (Reservation of Articles for production) Act, 1985, the Central Government has reserved articles or class of articles for exclusive production of handlooms for the protection and development of the handloom industry.
Further to this effort, the Ministry of Textiles launched “Handloom Mark” scheme with effect from 28.06.2006 for promoting and preserving the Indian handloom products and securing a premium position in the domestic as well as international market. This provides a collective identity to the handloom products of India for popularizing the hand woven products originating from the handloom sector. Thus, the Handloom Mark does not necessarily guarantee a bench mark quality for the product, but ensures only the origin of the product.

Though the weavers produce rich variety of designs and textures, there is not much emphasis on the quality of the product due to various reasons. Experience of implementing Handloom Mark in the past years indicate that this has served the limited purpose of production of cloth by handlooms and not been able to address the quality related parameters which are integral for development of handloom as a niche product.

It is stressed on the need to produce a fabric “with no defect and no effect on environment” and develop “Indian Handlooms” brand for assuring quality products meeting social and environmental compliances.

Indian Hand loom has evolved over generations, possess regional attributes, GI tag is to be procured for rare products, attach ' MAKE IN INDIA' logo to them, advise people to wear hand loom dresses once in a week, involve bollywood people to advertise product ranges, get Quality Control tag on products, conduct exhibitions to create awareness among us. By implementing above, Indian hand loom will find honourable place abroad

Government can take steps by helping handloom weavers to open a store near all big hotels in important tourist destinations, Railway stations and through Indian Tourism Board. This will help to promote & sell quality products to consumers. A small discount can be given to consumers when they purchase directly from authorised stores. This will prevent unauthorised agents selling fake & poor quality products. Hope Government will consider this suggestion and take steps to promote good sales.

Handloom products fail to attract people because of inconsistency of quality, lack of proper marketing, proper channelisation of inputs of good quality to manufacturers, training to upgrade facilities & designs of end products & pooling of resources of manufacturers to scale up facilities to make them viable. Steps taken by successive Governments have been half-hearted & funds have been siphoned off by middlemen. Workshops needs to be designed & conducted to achieve purpose & not for statistics

Sir. My suggestion that any Govt .Servant, Politician whoever caught with corruption charges should be immediately removed from the post held, all the property should be seized (Illegal assets). And all the pension benefits should be Stopped. Definitely I am writing in reference of VYAPAM Ghotala where politicians & govt Officials are involved.

We can have govt operated market for handlooms such as pashmina, kashmere wool, silk from all over india and their these goods shall be examined for further purpose. This would enhance demand because of international platform and would grab attention of the global consumers. But this could only be possible if their is a platform available to these people plus the state shall ensure international quality standards. India is known for its art in form of handlooms and handicraft to foreigners.

why don't we tie up with the international brands to help in research to ensure quality products and even help us to sell our products in their outlets under a sub-brand of them??
