Although Indian Railways enjoy the highest captive eyeballs in a railway system internationally, it earns less than 5% of its revenues through non-tariff sources. Many of the world railway systems generate 10% to 20% of their revenues from non-tariff sources.

IR typically has focused on increasing revenues through tariff hikes. It wants to change this and challenge the conventional thinking by exploiting new sources of revenue so that every asset, tangible or non-tangible, gets optimally monetized

We invite ideas from citizens on increasing non fare revenue for Indian Railways.

Respected Sir My suggestions are as follows IR loses a large part of its revenue on account of weighment of rakes not being done properly. If we devise the system of SAP and make it mandatory for online weighments then govt will earn a lot of revenue which is pilferaged.

4902 Submission, I hope you would be able to go through all. :) My suggestion: 1. Please modernize all the railway station to mall/shop culture like we have in airports. This must immediately for all Major Junction railways station. 2. Shopping in popular malls within accessibility on profit sharing basis will add extra revenue. 2. Have PPP schemes introduce to convert all the existing railways bogies to AC bogies. This will save lot of govt funds. Uday

-A card to be given to each person in which he/she has to swipe in/out to enter the railway station, in this way we can make paperless travel. - Open wifi network to be provided, with a nominal charges. - Installation of cameras in the train for surveillance purpose - Powerful Sensors to be installed on the trains to prevent rail accidents. - General compartment count need to be increased in trains. -

One more way to reduce cost and increase efficiency of all the engines of Indian Railways is the reduction of Heavy steel within the compartment. The berths can be made of quality fiber that has enough strength while it is light in weight. This can improve engine efficiency drastically for both diesel as well as electrical engines. The reduction in cost of operation itself can save a lot of revenues without touching the fare.
