Although Indian Railways enjoy the highest captive eyeballs in a railway system internationally, it earns less than 5% of its revenues through non-tariff sources. Many of the world railway systems generate 10% to 20% of their revenues from non-tariff sources.

IR typically has focused on increasing revenues through tariff hikes. It wants to change this and challenge the conventional thinking by exploiting new sources of revenue so that every asset, tangible or non-tangible, gets optimally monetized

We invite ideas from citizens on increasing non fare revenue for Indian Railways.

Introduce doctors while traveling. Like TCs at least one doctor in each train, particularly long journey trains helps for emergency treatments as well as treatments for small kids while traveling. People will be assured of healthy travel. Nominal charging for treatment is also acceptable to the public.

Increase/introduce chair car Ac/Non Ac bogies with long journey trains for the convenience of short distance travelers. eg Secunderbad to Nagpur- people prefers to travel by sitting than births. Bogies with with chairs accommodates more passengers and also at lower price. Generates revenue as well convenient for public.

Railway should open number of booking cum delivery offices at different demanding point in every city/ town. Users need not to travel long distances to book/ get the luggage from railway station. It will increase the load package so the revenue. A nominal cost could be charged for this extra facility. Still the cost by railway will be much smaller and will reduce the pollution.

Trains have a wide coverage of the Indian landscape. If they can be used to carry advertisements, substantial revenue can accrue. Another source could be the better utilization of the real estate at the disposal of the Indian Railways. This can be replanned and redeveloped on commercial lines, without sacrificing the utility for railways as such.

We should increase the security level inside the compartment and also the compartment facility to be modified as international level, the infrastructures to be upgrade inside the compartments..... Convert Railway stations into multi-level activity/Business centers like basement for parking, ground floor for railways and second floor and above for hotels, food courts, shopping mall and entertainment spaces.

The Indian railways can generate a huge revenue by not simply increasing fare. it had to give attention on its services which Is worst ever had. the Indian railways has no way to dispose off the garbage. no dustbins in the coachs. many times the travelling ticket examiner(tte) does not comes and hence some people avail the services for free. I request the govt. to give attention towards its railway staff
