Although Indian Railways enjoy the highest captive eyeballs in a railway system internationally, it earns less than 5% of its revenues through non-tariff sources. Many of the world railway systems generate 10% to 20% of their revenues from non-tariff sources.

IR typically has focused on increasing revenues through tariff hikes. It wants to change this and challenge the conventional thinking by exploiting new sources of revenue so that every asset, tangible or non-tangible, gets optimally monetized

We invite ideas from citizens on increasing non fare revenue for Indian Railways.

Like NCC provides Manpower to Indian Army. Railways Scouts and Guides can be instituted where Young Boys and Girls get Trained as Train operators, Signalling Staff, Railway crossing operators, RPF personnel, Crowd Management, Announcers, Supervise cleanliness, help in IRCTC in e-commerce logistics / Railway parcel service etc. This is in line with Skill India Objectives also. Young people get experience making them employable in other sectors of the economy. Railways Manpower costs will reduce.

Adopt a station concept. Define parameters, scope, such as carriage no.electronic displays can be supported by a small, medium or large company. Each display would also show the name of co. On it. There are huge swathes of land around stations, along tracks, employees' residential colonies, many are decades old structures. Have master plan to rebuild and create more square feet of living spaces. A contract can be given to, e.g. Larsen and Toubro to construct at Bhavanagar para colony.

1) Solid and dry Waste generated from railways can be use as alternate fuel to power plants which uses coal for power generation, thereby railways can earn revenue by selling this waste to power plants for power generation.

NGO's use volunteers to keep their costs very low. Indian Railways can use volunteers at various levels to help with functioning to reduce Manpower cost and also keep service levels high. Volunteers can be given free train pass to allow them to attend job interviews or pursue their passion such as photography, blog writing, making youtube videos, writing travel articles for media, short stories, books. etc. Volunteers will gain valuable experience which they can show in their biodatas.
