Although Indian Railways enjoy the highest captive eyeballs in a railway system internationally, it earns less than 5% of its revenues through non-tariff sources. Many of the world railway systems generate 10% to 20% of their revenues from non-tariff sources.

IR typically has focused on increasing revenues through tariff hikes. It wants to change this and challenge the conventional thinking by exploiting new sources of revenue so that every asset, tangible or non-tangible, gets optimally monetized

We invite ideas from citizens on increasing non fare revenue for Indian Railways.

5) Wedding halls with Railway memorabilia on display, 6) Railway memorabilia stores 7) Push carts on rent 8) Motorcycles, cycles or Polaris ATVs on rent at tourist stations (driving licences as collateral) 9)Mini movie hall at station, 10) 20 room clean motel at every station. Private public JVs could be beneficial to both parties.

Focus on Passenger Segment: IR suffers loss of approx ₹300 billion in the passenger segment per year. If you cannot increase fare (which should be re-considered as most people expect better facilities with a bit of additional cost), the only other part which can be done is to make sure the corruption is reduced in ticket booking. IR has a huge task force of TTE. They should be utilized to the maximum effect to make sure people do not travel without tickets, inline with the anti-corruption drive.

Railway stations are the biggest middle class footfall zones in the country. The problem is that they are also the dirtiest and the most financially under utilised footfall zones. Most stations have the most beautiful, old buildings which hold so much potential if properly maintained and managed. I see the potential for private investors to pay the railways rentals to: 1) Manage their parking, 2) Create shopping space for rental 3) Maintain the buildings to increase footfall, 4) Billboards

Indian Railway can increase non fare revenue by following ways:- (a.) Rent the blank/free land for agriculture. (b.) Building market complex on big stations. (c.) Digital advertisement LED/Projector in waiting halls. (d.) By issuing term deposit, bond, loan and saving account for direct investment of people like banks. (e.) By conducting examination.

I could see a ticket less travelers getting punished in Southern Part of India whereas our ticket itself goes unchecked in Northern side. That gives levy to most of the people to travel without tickets & still escape the clutch of law. Pls dont touch passenger fares at any cost & dont ever plan to charge for basic services. Revenue is must, but we want this Government to continue & we need to keep an eye on vote bank as well.Increasing goods fare by 10% would be a better choice.

Put the advertisement banners of private sector on railway coches. increase luguagge coches in express trains.gives the land on rent to private compannies.automate the system reduce the maintaince cost of platform and railyway coches

General class seats should also be numbered and booked online as at present Police persons take money and can be seen providing seats.Sitting/standing tickets at similar cost to third AC should be provided in stations and those holding them should be allowed to travel in General,Sleeper class and third AC and second AC standing ticket should be allowed to booked online as majority of Second AC Berths are used by pass holders and this will eliminate penalty corruption,theft and crimes due to ID

1.If possible play FM in railway bhogies. 2.Encourage general ticket booking through apps 3.Reduce less occupied trains and increase the trains in more popular trains 4.Put cc cameras in reserved bhogies so that TTEs cant commit to a bribe so that that money will be added to government account. 5.Regular monitoring shouls be done on TTEs 6.Have a tie up with online cab providers so that passesnger can book a ticket from the boarding point to his home at one time

Focus on Freight: IR earns approx 70% of its revenues from freight traffic. Management can focus on making freight more effective to reduce the time-of-transportation. We should also look into options of speeding-up freight engines, making the logistics more efficient so that wait-age time is reduced and the train is ready for the next pick-up / consignment. Any loss during transportation should also be reduced / eliminated by making RPF more stringent. Better freight will make a better IR.
