Although Indian Railways enjoy the highest captive eyeballs in a railway system internationally, it earns less than 5% of its revenues through non-tariff sources. Many of the world railway systems generate 10% to 20% of their revenues from non-tariff sources.

IR typically has focused on increasing revenues through tariff hikes. It wants to change this and challenge the conventional thinking by exploiting new sources of revenue so that every asset, tangible or non-tangible, gets optimally monetized

We invite ideas from citizens on increasing non fare revenue for Indian Railways.

Railway stations as well as trains must have automatic tea, milk and coffee vending machines and vendors should be totally disallowed from AC coaches. Smoke detectors are must. Ticket prices should be based on profitability rather than upon purchasing power . Dynamic pricing should go because it hits most those who book in emergency.

Any way irctc is earning more with fare by dynamic fares and tatkal tickets having no scope for normal people travel or general bhogies. If it is a non fare effective then i would suggest following points. 1.Make tie up with ecommerce companies to parcel thier orders 2.Allow companies to advertise in railway stations and ask them to take the cleaning responsibility. For ex if acompany is willing to advertise on a platform it has to take over all cleanliness of that platform.

Indian Railway can increase by transporting materials from all railway stations with timely n fair service . Railway should keep a conductor to issue tickets during/ at the time of boarding of the passenger. Instant booking of luggage at all stations. Rail should not provide any amenities except traveling, Water etc on platforms n rail coaches & should make reservations n sleeper classes during 9 PM to 6 AMam only

no matter how many extra things u add to earn money, the main revenue source which is the ticket sale should be the most focussed thing..if the current ticket prices are not even covering up the costs..prices have to be increased ...people will travel.u can't keep he cost low and bear losses.

In Germany international and hub airports are connected to other towns through trains. These airports have train station as a part of their structure. Air tickets are also issues as "Rail & Fly". So it is convenient for air passengers and revenue for IR. Example:Bangalore airport has a rail line within 5km. If a station can be built with a fast train connecting nearby towns like mysore, tumkur, Coimbatore, hassan, kadapa, kolar, bangalore city, house etc. it can benefit people, airport and IR

Honorable Railway Minister, One simple suggestion which initially may sound too costly to afford but in long run will undoubtedly prove worthy. That is, lay four lanes (2 up & 2 down) exclusively dedicated for non- fare business and as earlier thought let them run at a speed of minimum 120 KMPH. Ill minded and politically motivated either people or politicians from opposition will create a number of hurdles in implementing so but your government will have to be well determined. All the best..

Roll on roll off is in use for trucks in konkan rail, for cars on London to Paris train. In USA containers are carried after trucks place them on trains. Why not allow roll on role off for trucks, cars and containers on IR? Going from 1 city to another does not need person to drive. Personal vehicle is required for personal transport in the destination city/town. For the cost of fuel, if car can be transported on train, people would happily pay for avoiding strain of driving and tolls.

3rd party Advertisement - IR have huge number of users each days. Thousands of passengers travel in trains, use stations / platforms. We should extensively look at multiple options of advertisements in trains (both inside & outside), platforms, ticket counters, on paper tickets, on items being sold from railways like water bottles etc. This is the easiest way to get additional non-fare revenue with minimum investment. It would add to Swatch Bharat mission as well with new dynamic ads.
