Although Indian Railways enjoy the highest captive eyeballs in a railway system internationally, it earns less than 5% of its revenues through non-tariff sources. Many of the world railway systems generate 10% to 20% of their revenues from non-tariff sources.

IR typically has focused on increasing revenues through tariff hikes. It wants to change this and challenge the conventional thinking by exploiting new sources of revenue so that every asset, tangible or non-tangible, gets optimally monetized

We invite ideas from citizens on increasing non fare revenue for Indian Railways.

I agree with many posts below have given good suggestions, I stress on bringing efficiency railway service by sticking timing of journey departure and reaching destinations. All train should have same priority in signalling and crossing. Why any train wait for other trains for crossing. If we know time tables in advance why signal to crossing trains why there is delay in every trains reaching. This will bring more revenue not by increasing fair alone

1. Reduce Power Cost (Electricity / Diesel) by introducing Solar System on roof top of every Coach. 2. Reduce the concession (10%) for Senior Citizen as well as Central and State Govt. Employees. 3. Keep 2 LCD display on each Compartment and start as advertising media. Also Use Railway Website for giving advertisement. 4. Keep more stalls in Platform and give it to Rent. 5. Keep Electronic Ticket Checking System so Manpower Cost will be Reduce. 6. Introduce more trains in some routes.

My views for: Subject: Increasing non-fare revenue for Indian Railways 1) Cutting down on contractual labor workers who are not trained and consume man-hours for fat daily wages which are signed on the Daily Attendance Roster of the Indian Railways. 2) Use of Modern devices, such as accounting practices, for the basic raw materials used and stored at the concerned Railway depots. 3) Preventing hawkers who are not holding certificates for selling on Indian Railways Platforms.

Bring accountability to TT, they all sell non booked seats without ticket, IT raid should happen on TT of railways. As I mentioned in previous post increase utilization of track by running more trains of less number of bogies. In western countries small trains for 2-10 minutes connecting small cities very punctual in timing

1st, use of own vacant land and illegal occupied land which may rent to any pvt company for business purpose. 2nd, Advertisements in all trains and rate should be based on class of trains. 3rd, increase minimum monthly fare which is almost 1/3rd of the total exact fare. So, it should increase 20-50 % on the present fare. 4th, don’t give free WIFI. 5th, all stations and train vendors should provide license on a minimum charge of Rs 100 annually and put some monthly rent to them.

if railway is to be saved, its monopoly must go. atleast monopoly over passenger services. than it has tremendous scope to grow.

Issue railway bonds. Do not give interest. Offer to use irctc facilities equivalent to interest accumulated after one year. Railway money will remain with railway. Tourism will increase.

however i fear these employees will not allow any such thing to happen as it will threaten their vested interests. further GRP and RPF who are supposed to keep anti social activities like unauthorised vending/hawking/bag lifting, in practice promote these activities by taking bribes.

My travel in UK, timing and connectivity to all train stations is ultimate. So I suggest 1. Bring punctuality in timing (average train never reaches in time or start in Time_ 2. Reduce travel time currently from 13-14 hours buses is 6-8 hours 3. Optimize track utilization, increase frequency and reduce time between 2 trains so that for ever 10 KM at least we 4 trains running 4. Install automatic food(snacks/drink/water) vending machine in train for fair price 5. Increase fair by 10%

I am a regular traveler by Indian Railways. I see a lot of obsolete Railway property like discarded railway tracks, wooden slippers, out-of-use buildings and many more things along the tracks. Railways can generate a lot of revenue by timely and regular auctioning of these obsolete property. I do not think it will require a lot of manpower for this.
