Although Indian Railways enjoy the highest captive eyeballs in a railway system internationally, it earns less than 5% of its revenues through non-tariff sources. Many of the world railway systems generate 10% to 20% of their revenues from non-tariff sources.

IR typically has focused on increasing revenues through tariff hikes. It wants to change this and challenge the conventional thinking by exploiting new sources of revenue so that every asset, tangible or non-tangible, gets optimally monetized

We invite ideas from citizens on increasing non fare revenue for Indian Railways.

To increase the cargo-transport revenue: - 1) Start dedicated service between important points, say Delhi-Mumbai corridor. 2) Have such service on daily basis 3) Cover this distance in less time than as taken by trucks, reduce time by 30-40% 4) privatize the cargo bookings for such dedicated service 5) Maintain the quality of the service 6) In case the time can be reduced to half to that of trucks, charge premium, or same rate that of trucks.

I have following ideas for Indian railway to increase non fare revenue 1. Transform the waiting halls of big stations in open dining halls where railway can ask to McD, KFC, Pizza, and other food companies to bid for their stalls. It will give a boost to permanent revenue model of Indian Railway 2. Initiate railway's lounge services 3. Initiate the tour packages programs from Indian railways which include the onward/outward journey fare+staying charges at visiting places+other #NonFareRevenue

Allowing telecom companies to erect towers in railways land. 3. Naming trains after popular brands. 4. Hosting holiday packages in collaboration of tourism deptt. 5. Providing wifi in trains/stations on paid basis. 6. Launching own FM accessible over throughout railways network. Advertisement will generate the revenue. 7. Ads over ticket and coaches.

Increasing Efficiency of RAilway Employees. Increasing & fine tuning Material Management of Railway Resources. Training Staff & making them more responsible & increasing efficiency of all Staff. Reducing & Re-using materials lying every-where , so space & existing inventory could be utilized rather buying new. Creating Hotel infrastructure above Railway Stations for accommodations.

Increasing Speed of All trains & making efficient use of existing infrastructure to maximise uses of all Tracks & routes so more passengers can be moved from one place to next. Decreasing by well planning un-necessary delays in Trains moments , as major losses happens because of much mis-management of Trains due to delayed trains. Adding Chair car coaches to all Trains for small journey people who are traveling for short distances.

1) Add "Platform usage charges" to the passenger train fare for the passengers starting or ending journey from those stations. This similar to airport usage charges, for the stations in metro cities. This will generate revenue to help upkeep those stations. 2) Track the "idle time" of the railway engines, freight containers. The idle time is revenue loss. Increase the engine/freight container overall utilization. Use GPS/GPRS/RFID based tracking device and use IT to analyze the "idle/times"

3. Railway should introduce target and incentive based competition among officials for increasing non fare revenue by selective means. 4. Railway sites are visited by many per day so it should introduce add-campaign through their website like google, quicker etc.Huge revenue can be generated by this means. 5. Railway should introduce appropriate method to eradicate the system of paying to TT and get seat confirmed kind of scenario.
