Although Indian Railways enjoy the highest captive eyeballs in a railway system internationally, it earns less than 5% of its revenues through non-tariff sources. Many of the world railway systems generate 10% to 20% of their revenues from non-tariff sources.

IR typically has focused on increasing revenues through tariff hikes. It wants to change this and challenge the conventional thinking by exploiting new sources of revenue so that every asset, tangible or non-tangible, gets optimally monetized

We invite ideas from citizens on increasing non fare revenue for Indian Railways.

The Indian Railways can also think of conducted and guided tours with hotels, food and assistance thrown in (with or without the collaboration of ITDC). It can run its own chain of hotels/inns built up on its unused land in major towns and cities (or can collaborate with dependable hoteliers).

1. Similar to Bus and Aeroplane First Come First Serve basis confirmed tickets which is non transferable and cancellation rules. 2. New lines for 100KM to 200KM connectivity which will increase daily commute by tremendous volume to help trade as well passengers. 3. New multiple lines and express for long run to help trade across states such as if there is separate line from Bangalore-Pune which is currently taking 14 to 16 hours will reduce time to 7 to 8 hours. 4. All IT city interconnected.

First railway coaches should be very clean and pest control to be maintained regularly. Wifi /Cell charger availability.Every coach should have a small petty shop pantry other than the pantry car so that passengers should buy more without troubles and revenue will increase. All the railway stations should strictly follow swatch Bharat with neat and clean and toilets should be constructed in each and every station. Also to cover the middle class people smaller budget around India tour rails.

1. Railways have a lot of land adjacent to stations. Now, as the mall culture is catching up, supermarkets can be built there. A part of the super market can be made accessible to the passengers as well. Prominent retailers can bid to be a part of the market. 2. The tops of the platforms can be converted into solar panels for generation of electricity. 3. Other transport agencies - e.g. the state roadways, S.I.T.A. etc. can have their offices in the railway area and work in tandem.

My suggestions are as follows: 1. Advertisement on/in the railway coaches just like Delhi Metro 2. No concession to MLA/MPs. They are earning more than a common man , so why they are getting concessions. 3. Speciality Leases of the railway premises. There is a lot of vacant space which can be leased. 4. Solar panels on the top of railway coaches. The excess electricity can be sold. 5. Online ticket booking price must be less than booking in counter. It will help in digital payment.

Secure coaches - for elders and for folks carrying valuables, we could have a coach or a full train which enables the doors to be open only based on UID fingerprint scans and with armored guard in coaches. This probably works best for point to point trains. But, certainly high-tech and Railways can demand a premium price for this

Leasing/Auction of operation of some trains to some qualified Private Companies on the basis of highest Auction value . Contract value shall be more than the minimum value estimated by Railway Statistical Division for any particular train. Leased company (selected through online process) shall be given some rights for operation like Advertisement, Pantry Car operation , Sale of some items on demand, so that companies can generate profit from that.

I think the general compartments in every train should be increased so there would be less crowd in compartments.and the genral ticket would be provided in the compartment as in busses .so every people will have the tickets and will get seats. There must be luggage limits in all the coaches as in flighs.
