Although Indian Railways enjoy the highest captive eyeballs in a railway system internationally, it earns less than 5% of its revenues through non-tariff sources. Many of the world railway systems generate 10% to 20% of their revenues from non-tariff sources.

IR typically has focused on increasing revenues through tariff hikes. It wants to change this and challenge the conventional thinking by exploiting new sources of revenue so that every asset, tangible or non-tangible, gets optimally monetized

We invite ideas from citizens on increasing non fare revenue for Indian Railways.

Rationalization of stops at stations.. many trains stop at small stations and end up spending significant amount of time in stops. If we can rationalize this - for example, we could have trains stop at these stations on weekdays to accommodate office going folks but on weekends the trains could skip these stations - We can probably run more number of trains given that some trains run faster now due to lesser stops.. Ofcourse rationalization of rates some unreserved ticket are ridiculously cheap

Sir, allover India -Bus depots/ Private Bus stands are far away from railway stations. Generally it is observed that most of the railway stations are having ample open space in front / also on either sides of the station. This space can be leased to Bus Depots/ Private bus operators as passenger terminals this will help in additional revenue and alo helps in increase in regular rail passenger also and facilitates good connectivity between railways and road transport modes side by side.

Could we manage 4 tiers in a coach? If there is an organized way of managing baggages - just like airlines where a passenger drops off his luggage and carries only a small piece (at least in point to point express trains which stops only at a few stations), the lower berth can be lowered and if we can manage one more berth - 4 tiers in total - that would be a great thing.

If we look at the way airports are organized, we can get a fair idea - The stations can as well have shopping opportunities for customers - Branded stores that can serve as a revenue earner for Railways and are very attractive to customers. Travel accessories, Electronics items , Branded food - Chocolates, Dry Fruits - all these would be very very attractive in Big Cities. I do not think it will generate huge / comparable amount of revenue - but could be one of the ways to earn some revenue

#1. More routes and Circuits like PALACE ON WHEELS , should be explored all over India , ranging from 3 to 15 days. And then a massive publicity campaign for them should be done online on Sites like Travel.com, Tripadvisor.com etc , hotels.com which foreigners regularly use to check on ratings and update.#2. Brake Energy regeneration - which is used in Delhi Metro should be used in Railways as well. #3. All Subsidies should be withdrawn with immediate effect , let there be protests.

My suggestions are as follows: 1.Ticket concession to tax payers to encourage timely tax deposit 2.No concession to MLA/MPs 3.Concession to BPL card holders 4.Fair distribution of e-tickets and Tatkals in IRCTC 5.Online ticket booking price must be less than booking in counter. It will help in digital payment.

More Suggestions 1.Unaccompanied Students/kids Travel -It has become a major concern for working parents as they are not able to accompany their children during the kids' vacation travel. Guarantee Kids Safety from point to point and charge a fee for that. Also get patent for '' Travel Kids Safety''

1. Strict Rules for People without Tickets. 2. Incentives/Gifts on Ticket (May be by Lottery System, don't make it big just small gifts but it Matters). 3. Strict Rules for TC (To control Corruption so that fine must be deposited in Government Account) 4. C.C.T.V. in Trains 5. Increase in Number of General boggies. 6. Increase in Number of Ticket Counters (especially for General Tickets) 7. Incentives on Railway Pass for those who are regular customer. 8. Strict Rules for Agents.
