Although Indian Railways enjoy the highest captive eyeballs in a railway system internationally, it earns less than 5% of its revenues through non-tariff sources. Many of the world railway systems generate 10% to 20% of their revenues from non-tariff sources.

IR typically has focused on increasing revenues through tariff hikes. It wants to change this and challenge the conventional thinking by exploiting new sources of revenue so that every asset, tangible or non-tangible, gets optimally monetized

We invite ideas from citizens on increasing non fare revenue for Indian Railways.

1. Roof-top of all Railway stations should be fitted with Solar panels to generate electricity. This electricity can be used for lighting platforms and outside areas. Surplus electricity can be sold to private party. 2. Lets make "Honesty is the best policy" for Railway for next 3 years. Try to teach this to all staff. If honesty during work is encouraged, the Railway can generate 25-20% extra revenue. 3. Commercialize open spaces for advertisement. Many stations have enough space for this.

The pride of India ,our motherland ,is Railway. To make it moreprofitable, entire system must be converted into digital mode.Catering, drinking water, internet facilities,TTe, security system and vendoring ,signaling, advertisement all regarding railway to be digitised . Monitoring should be strictly maintained. Even if it needs to be privatized, do that with deep confidence.People want good service and want securty and free from all hazzards .I trust ,people will take it with heart if they feel ease

Since the movement goods is enormous, Govt can give private sector transportation of goods in addition to what the Railways are currently doing. They can be given on annual contracts fetching additional revenue to the Railways.

Instead of railway staff moving around coaches and selling tea, coffee, etc., Food menu can be made available through mobile apps and passengers can directly browse the menu and order their food/snacks. Digital payment will eliminate false billing and passengers also will pay the set standard rates for all items.

6- Improve infrastructure for freight. The steps to improve freight infrastructure is a welcome one. The capability of passenger train to carry freight bogies as last wagon, and remove at appropriate station to improve reliability and timed deliveries along with passenger train reliability. Also moving freight reservation and management online, and better management can improve freight usage.

5- Reducing the cost of operation by reducing staff. Railway employs around 14 Lakh employees. The step to rationalize staff strength in June 2015 was great. By increasing transparency and accountability, link promotion/benefits , to performance metrics instead of seniority, and with strong vigilance board, it should consider reducing hierarchy to reduce the managerial/beuracratic staff. Eg.Direct deposit of salary into bank accounts and reduce cashier positions.
