Although Indian Railways enjoy the highest captive eyeballs in a railway system internationally, it earns less than 5% of its revenues through non-tariff sources. Many of the world railway systems generate 10% to 20% of their revenues from non-tariff sources.

IR typically has focused on increasing revenues through tariff hikes. It wants to change this and challenge the conventional thinking by exploiting new sources of revenue so that every asset, tangible or non-tangible, gets optimally monetized

We invite ideas from citizens on increasing non fare revenue for Indian Railways.

Increase revenues through ads- * Railway coaches can be facilitated with LCD's to show ads on state wise. Also, it can additionally help people to know which station is about to reach. * Coaches can be equipped with WiFi. Users can buy vouchers to use the WiFi service. * Railway stations can have high class lounges like airports. * Many TTEs take bribe and allow passengers with invalid tickets. TTEs should have digital machines to charge any passenger.

1. Railways should look to rent out property to Big Bazar/ Shoppers stop/Westside/Pantaloons/Inox/PVR etc for developing malls, Cinema halls in its officers colony premises. Railway officers families are often deprived of recreation facilities of high standard as Rly jobs means high level of travelling or even postings in odd locations leaving their families in some urban city. These malls/cinema multiplexes will have to provide some discounts to Rly employees against their family photo ids.

#NonFareRevenue For all passengers offer free wifi for 30 mins per mobile number and then offer the same on a nominal chargeable basis. This can be a big revenue generator. #NonFareRevenue If we can have LCD screens for each seat, we can show in-transport entertainment interspersed with advertisements which can be another big revenue generator as this is a captive audience. All Railway Stns, on the non Platform side have panel ads at the eye level for travellers for promotional advertisement.

2- Moving some services to private players, a. Food vendors at station, train 3- Judicious use of real estate near the stations The railway land near the stations can be used better by leasing out carparking, hotel/restraunts etc. 4- Reducing Maintenance cost Diesel engines are costlier to maintain than Electric, Similar comparisons can be seen in reducing cost/km/person across trains, and looking at the numbers to take decisions.

1- Advertisement avenues: Indian railways have old infrastructure, and a huge chance of improvement. The advertisements in internet allows reducing the cost of usage to nearly nill. We should be using Advertisement to the fullest. Few samples may be: a. During Journey: Train Doors, small portion of floors, Food packing, Food tray paper, etc. b. On Station: Waiting Rooms, Platforms, Outside station barricades etc.

Hi, I have below ideas :- 1) Railways can start advertising on coaches. We can wrap the entire coach for the specific brand. Pricing may vary from Train to Train. Like Shatabdi/Rajdhani will have more cost as compared to other Express trains. Also, price for this advertising would be from one coach to complete rail depending upon the requirement. 2) Allow good quality food vendors to sell their foods in all trains. Railways can charge some fixed amount as a fees from those vendors.
