Although Indian Railways enjoy the highest captive eyeballs in a railway system internationally, it earns less than 5% of its revenues through non-tariff sources. Many of the world railway systems generate 10% to 20% of their revenues from non-tariff sources.

IR typically has focused on increasing revenues through tariff hikes. It wants to change this and challenge the conventional thinking by exploiting new sources of revenue so that every asset, tangible or non-tangible, gets optimally monetized

We invite ideas from citizens on increasing non fare revenue for Indian Railways.

Railways has a lot of land which are lying vacant/unused/illegally occupied etc. Such land should be brought to use by: 1. Leasing it out for marriages/functions etc. 2. Constructing community halls and then renting those out. Basically, bring all the land under Railways for some constructive purpose which serves income to railways.

Ensure every person at the railway infrastructure is verifiable, right from the railway staff, passengers, vendors, attendants, to ensure safety and discipline. Freelance vendors to be monitored and regularized, rather public rating be available on the railway app linked to their vending ID. That it help the ethical vendors and public as well.

Allowing private people is big hurdle in income to railways. I will give my own experience in Rail parcel. I booked a parcel from Vijayawada to Surat in Rail parcel. The rate is very cheap compared to road transport. To carry the boxes and load it into train they charged 150/-. If you just book the parcel left the place, it wont be loaded for many days. Without money no work. In this situation, what about a person who is new to this scenario? Next time he won't book the parcel by train.

Railway Platforms to be privatized or developed on PPP mode like airports. Parking lots- elevated to be developed on PPP mode - definatley facilitate to public. Small one person vendors earn their lively hood - ofcource they have to pay free lunches to railway staff to sell in train and plotforms. These persons to be regularised and allowed officailly on proper verification and sort of token charges- so that they need not be exploited by railway staff and RPF people.

Long trip trains can introduce a business / entertainment cabin dedicated, travelers can book these facilities while they book the journey. There are no:of people who books first class or 2 tier AC just for meetings with limited choices. With intro to these kind of facilities Business trips will be more and family trips who specially take journey for marriages and all they will enjoy.

3. Marketing campaigns allowed in railway stations. As multiplexes allow standees / banners and a stall or something like that inside their premises and they charge for it. All they provide is space (which railways already have) and audience(which is meant to gather on stations). So this is a pure revenue with minimum man efforts involved.

2. Licensing small vendors and getting very small amount for a year's registration like say rs. 50 per year or per month. Vendors should present those licenses when asked by the supervisors, or even people might get to know who is the licensed vendor and who is not. Licensing bigger vendors with slightly bigger amount. This will result in having their data with department and data has its own benefits.
