Although Indian Railways enjoy the highest captive eyeballs in a railway system internationally, it earns less than 5% of its revenues through non-tariff sources. Many of the world railway systems generate 10% to 20% of their revenues from non-tariff sources.

IR typically has focused on increasing revenues through tariff hikes. It wants to change this and challenge the conventional thinking by exploiting new sources of revenue so that every asset, tangible or non-tangible, gets optimally monetized

We invite ideas from citizens on increasing non fare revenue for Indian Railways.

Please match the actual tariff of fares and introduce irctc wallet system and prepaid cards with cashback benefits on transactions & deposits. With a little cashback than existing subsidies, revenues will automatically increase.

To increase non fare revenue Indian Rail required: 1. Take the places surrounding the station and use commercially. 2. Decrease transport fare and increase number of goods train. 3. Increase goods security, so that any one can trust on rail's service. 4. Advertisement will be a good initiative. 5. Goods tracking software or app is required to serve better service. Automatically people use it for their own and take service from rail. 6. Unused property of rail should be sold.

Add a compartment on each long distance train where people can shop. By having a mall compartment, people that are bored on long distance trains can shop and kill time. The mall compartment can have multiple stalls that can be rented out to private entities like Railway station stalls.

Lease space adjacent to railway tracks. These space are full of garbage everywhere. Companies can be allowed to put their hoardings with the condition that they maintain the space clean. Also come up with innovative ideas like maintaining a garden or vegetable cultivation. This will go a long way in the Swachch Bharat campaign.
