The role of institutions of higher education in societal development is becoming increasing significant. In recent years, higher education has isolated itself from the society and there is a need to re-establish and strengthen higher education’s close linkages with the society. How can Universities foster social responsibility and engage in community outreach programmes. Sharing some working examples would also be a useful input.

Linking higher education to society may be done by improving the Quality of Higher Education and Internationalization of higher education because the latest survey of ASSOCHAM shows that about 6 to 7 Billion Dollar Spent by Indian Students Every year on foreign degrees. We have to curb the drain of this huge amount by improving the quality of HE and Internationalization of HE and thus the problem of financial resource constraints will also be get solved.

Youth should be made to be proud of our rich heritage. We have the oldest calendar in the world ( The kali varsha). But Europeans and after Independence those submissive to European culture recognised only Saka and Vikramaditya calenders which are of later or near about origin as Gregorian calendar. First we should recognise Kali Varsha calendar for official purposes. Instead of bringing American and western trained personnel, we should have those who are well versed in Arthasastra.

Linking with society, doing awareness programmes about the course, as well as providing benefits to the society related to the course/s should be made mandatory. This criteria should be part of the Accreditation exercise. For example, a Sociology college should take up social cause issues in the society and provide benefits, with the help of its students. They should adopt villages for such projects. Medical students should look after health issues, awareness of adopted villages, etc.

Higher education in India is far to focused on engineering & Management allied Subjects. No importance what so ever is given to Vocational, Art, Craft, Design, Music & Drama. These subjects are considered "Good for Noting" which has resulted into many social issues in our society. It is very Important that Design Courses be started in all the Universities so that our youth can be employed in creative areas. unless we see Design as a important Subject in University structure,China would flourish.

Today our society only valued money & early success, that's why every parents direct their children towards professional educations.Very few prefer more lengthier higher studies for research & development. We need to change our mindset & change it from being a applier of others products developed by their research & development to be the applier of our own products & technology made. Our society need to follow our age old tradition "Vidwan Sarbatra Pujyate".
