India has a rich legacy of practices and knowledge touching different spheres of life and a scientific heritage traversing various Science & Technology (S&T) domains. The traditional knowledge of India is available in various forms such as classical texts, manuscripts and/or as oral communication that has been passed on over thousands of years. This valuable knowledge is often part of our daily practices as well. Some of the traditional practices are livelihood means of the concerned knowledge holders. Our traditional practices exist in synergy between human needs and nature, often balancing resources and requirements in a local context. However, with time, India’s Traditional Knowledge Systems are eroding rapidly, and the nation has also been witnessing erosion in people’s faith towards our traditional knowledge. A grave concern is the mindless attitude of some to mimic non-Indian cultures and disdain for our traditions. It’s important to recognize that traditional heritage is an integral part of any country’s development and progression. This calls for necessary attention and action from the concerned stakeholders in the country to build further on our scientific inheritance. Only a well-informed and balanced society can drive the advancement of the country.

Under the visionary leadership of our Hon’ble Prime Minister and President, CSIR Society, Shri Narendra Modi, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is spearheading the efforts to collaborate with the relevant partners from across the country and implement the national initiative SVASTIK (Scientifically Validated Societal Traditional Knowledge) for communicating India’s traditional knowledge to the society. CSIR-National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (CSIR-NIScPR) is the nodal organization to implement this national initiative.

The prime mission of the initiative is to conserve scientifically validated traditional practices, and instil confidence in citizens regarding the scientific values of our traditional knowledge/practices.

We invite the suggestions of academicians, researchers, subject-matter experts, students, NGOs, and the public on how to instil confidence in society about our traditional knowledge and practices. This will help us in our mission to inculcate a scientific temper and instil confidence in citizens by stimulating the Science-Scientist-Society connect towards our traditional knowledge and practices.

In Today’s world we have somewhat forgotten our traditions and our roots because of today’s hi-tech life. Indeed today’s hi-tech life have given us opportunities and made our lives easier but it is also pulling us apart from our traditions. Our education should start putting more emphasis on traditional knowledge. We should start teaching students from the primary level of our countries rich legacy and knowledge. There should be an establishment of an community that specifically promotes and encourage people to know about their legacy and country more.

Our Indian traditional wisdom is rich and vast and exemplary (Vedas, Sculpture, Architecture, economics commerce, literature, Yoga, Ayurveda, Dance, cultural heritage, sports, astrology etc.). Traditional wisdom covering these areas may be made as one of the subject from the initial stages of education in order to disseminate and derive the benefits of our enormous intellectual knowledge to bring back more/old glory. In this regard, i would like to mention a Sanskrit quote which is apt even now is : “Vruksho Rakshita Rakshitaha” (Save the tree, it will save you). Another example is: Surya Namaskaras, which strengthens and keeps us in good health. Traditional science denoted immense benefits from Sunlight( necessary for Agriculture etc) and mentioned as a rich source of energy and many scientific inventions made .

Most of our ancient practices and knowledge is disregarded as superstitious and without a logical backing. So, I suggest we start providing scientific explanation for our practices. For example, washing our feet and hands after coming home. This shows the emphasis on cleanliness. Presently, research proves that proper washing of hands can reduce the falling ill by almost 50 percent

We are now in techno Era ....but happiness is far away from us. Modernization is meant for destruction. So let's move back to our natives....mitti ki khushboo....mud house .. cool cool....brass utensils...rice water, pumpkin flowers, saag, dry fish, mango chatni, lassi,/ schacht, coconut milk, ...many more....sitting on ground ....really happiness is like heaven in villages. Encourage children to see the nature's creation with peace..

The most effective way is to put up shining examples of success and potency where the legacy practices are giving phenomenal results. It would help to get international measurements and data for some of these practices for more awareness. Also the legacy practices should not be seen or perceived to be competing or conflicting with modern science as we know it. Sanjeev

Respected sir, I think that in our country has traditional knowledge has large but practices is not large because our competition examination will be done by traditional knowledge but our practice is not traditional because many student can not carry on their studies for lack of economic condition. Traditional knowledge and practice is very important because practice is main point of knowledge mean traditional knowledge is not growing without practice. So, I think that our government should make coaching center for traditional knowledge and practice for non development villages for poor-pauper student who are government "Benefit Bank Passbook "Account holders. So, you have to think about my suggestions. Thak you very much always.
