India has a rich legacy of practices and knowledge touching different spheres of life and a scientific heritage traversing various Science & Technology (S&T) domains. The traditional knowledge of India is available in various forms such as classical texts, manuscripts and/or as oral communication that has been passed on over thousands of years. This valuable knowledge is often part of our daily practices as well. Some of the traditional practices are livelihood means of the concerned knowledge holders. Our traditional practices exist in synergy between human needs and nature, often balancing resources and requirements in a local context. However, with time, India’s Traditional Knowledge Systems are eroding rapidly, and the nation has also been witnessing erosion in people’s faith towards our traditional knowledge. A grave concern is the mindless attitude of some to mimic non-Indian cultures and disdain for our traditions. It’s important to recognize that traditional heritage is an integral part of any country’s development and progression. This calls for necessary attention and action from the concerned stakeholders in the country to build further on our scientific inheritance. Only a well-informed and balanced society can drive the advancement of the country.

Under the visionary leadership of our Hon’ble Prime Minister and President, CSIR Society, Shri Narendra Modi, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is spearheading the efforts to collaborate with the relevant partners from across the country and implement the national initiative SVASTIK (Scientifically Validated Societal Traditional Knowledge) for communicating India’s traditional knowledge to the society. CSIR-National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (CSIR-NIScPR) is the nodal organization to implement this national initiative.

The prime mission of the initiative is to conserve scientifically validated traditional practices, and instil confidence in citizens regarding the scientific values of our traditional knowledge/practices.

We invite the suggestions of academicians, researchers, subject-matter experts, students, NGOs, and the public on how to instil confidence in society about our traditional knowledge and practices. This will help us in our mission to inculcate a scientific temper and instil confidence in citizens by stimulating the Science-Scientist-Society connect towards our traditional knowledge and practices.

Sir, Namskar Recently visiting govt. offices in Belgavi, Karnataka, felt inconvenienced over finding nameplates in Kannada ( script ) only. The reimplementation of the three language formula is in the interest of national unity and integrity. Bilingual inscriptions stating government policies in ancient India underline traditional wisdom in governance. British made intelligent use of a Roman script to overcome language barriers. Let's use both local and English languages in Govt. offices all over.

Traditional knowledge is transmitted between generations through stories, songs, dances, carvings, paintings and performances. One of the major causes of traditional knowledge loss is a lack of documentation. Each district's Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs) are active in the process of documenting biological resources and associated traditional knowledge at the local level. Financial and technological assistance to BMCs could help them document more effectively. A gateway or hub for digitally retaining documents with features that allow the public to access general data such as common name, scientific name may be created that helps in creating trust in the general public. Creating awareness among school and college students through social media. Traditional knowledge holders provide their precious and valuable knowledge for free and rarely receive any compensation. There should be a mechanism in place for give-and-take between the knowledge provider and knowledge gainer.

Quotes about India on Spirituality “If I were asked under what sky the human mind has most fully developed some of its choicest gifts, has most deeply pondered on the greatest problems of life, and has found solutions, I should point to India.” – Max Muller

knowledge is valuable not only to those who depend on it in their daily lives, but to modern industry and agriculture as well. Many widely used products, such as plant-based medicines, health products and cosmetics, are derived from traditional knowledge. Other such valuable products include agricultural and non-wood forest products as well as handicraft. Traditional knowledge can make a significant contribution to sustainable development. Most indigenous and local communities are situated in areas where the vast majority of the world’s genetic resources are found. Many of them have cultivated and used biodiversity in a sustainable way for thousands of years. Some of their practices have been proven to enhance

Keeping sentiments apart , the traditional knowledge shall be scientifically analysed and patent to be obtained. These traditional knowledge which are proven shall be the drive force for new solutions to environmental friendly India. It is disheartened to see many practices are allowed on the base of sentiments. If india wants to be a leader it shall be a master in all scientific fields. In house development and skill harness shall be in this direction. It shall analyse the old wisdom and reach conclusion with evidence. But will government show the political will to say one stream of old wisdom or traditional knowledge is scientifically verifiable? We are emotionally attached to increase the reach of traditional knowledge we believe with government support. We also must test and accept/reject this old knowledge. Finally the proven traditional knowledge based solutions shall be accessible to the poorest .Designing a test methodology after proper R&D with a team of all concerned beneficiaries.

The richness of our culture and heritage is undeniable . It is the reason why we are proud of our legacy . Recently one of my friend in US was diagnosed with mouth cancer . After surgery the doctor advised him to rinse his mouth with warm turmeric water to fasten the healing process . A simple spice used in almost every Indian household it’s effects are that potent.. to be used for cancer patients .. it’s awesome news .. in fact I have with me this extremely old .. nearly a century old ayurveda book which has remedies from piles to paralysis but no one wants to read this storehouse of cures …….. what an absolute waste
