Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, in Karnataka State has been selected by the Ministry of Urban Development as one of the 100 smart cities to participate in the “Smart City” Challenge Stage-2 by the Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India.

Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation was constituted in the year 1962 by combining two cities separated by a distance of 20 kilometers. This was a unique experiment in urban development history. The area of this Corporation is 202.3sq.kms, spread over 45 revenue villages. The population of the city as per the 1991 Census was 7 lakhs. The present population is nearly more than 9.43 lakhs. Under the Government of India Act of 1850, the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal council was established on August 15, 1855.

Hubli-Dharwad has the potential to be one of the top most cities in India provided it should address some of the important aspects like 1)Good roads 2) Purifed drinking water facilities to each ward 3)Ring road to avoid traffic jams. 4) Separate truck terminal outside the city. 5Improving drainage system at slums. 6) Forming smart city committee involving people from different field. 7) Developing gardens in the city. 8) Steps to be taken to check pollution of all sorts.

1.Proper construction of roads. 2.Providing free education for poor people. 3.Proper construction of toilets for students in the schools & colleges to prevent open air defecation. 4.Proper hygiene should be maintained. 5.Providing health facilities for the people. 6.Increase an educational Organizations. 7.Recycling of papers & needful things should be done. 8.Traffic rules should be followed by everyone. No-kill animal shelters for stray animals of all kinds with spay/neuter facilities, Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) programs, and education and outreach for the local population re: animal welfare. TNR has worked in Jaipur and other places, it's called Animal Birth Control (ABC) there.
