Agartala, the capital of Tripura, is situated in the flood plains of the Haora River. Agartala Connected through Airways, NF Railway & the National Highway (NH)-44 with Silchar, Guwahati and other parts of the country.

Under the ‘Smart Cities’ mission, various smart and innovative works would be under-taken in various sectors such as drinking water system, sewerage, sanitation, SWM, public transport, storm water drains, parks, community hall, roads, flyover and others.

Agartala Municipal Corporation has started doing innovation for improving the quality of life of citizens; like LED lighting, Disaster management, Solid waste management etc. Recently, Agartala Municipal Corporation was Awarded for successful implementation of LED Light project. A total of 3,200 LED lights were installed in the city.

Under this Mission preparation of SMART City Plan and formulate its own unique vision and strategies through citizen‘s& stakeholder’s views and suggestion on Smart City. Agartala Municipal Corporation requests all to share their ideas, suggestions, vision and innovative solutions and grab this opportunity to be a part of this challenge to transform Agartala into SMART CITY.

Citizens are requested to suggest innovative, sustainable and SMART solutions for the Area Based Strategies:

• Retrofitting (Planning and improvement of infrastructure in an existing built-up area);
• Redevelopment (Replacement of existing built-up area and co-creation of new layout with enhanced infrastructure);
• Greenfield Development (planning and development in new areas) and also viable
• PAN City Initiative.

Agartala Municipal Corporation is looking forward for valuable suggestions from all the citizens of Agartala.

Last date to submit your valuable ideas and suggestions is 31st October, 2015.

Another important factor is the absence of Auto/Taxi stand for 24 hours service in every locality. It is undeniable that Agartala is getting smarter day by day. Local people and the visitors face immense problems whenever they do not get a reserved Auto or Taxi at point of need especially at late night. At list a single transport should be there compulsorily in every locality.

The participation of rickshaws as a way of transportation in Town areas has also become a matter of turmoil. I know Agartala is a small town which can be easily covered up through rickshaw. But to run a systematic and evener traffic system there should be rickshaw-stand inside the rural and semi-town areas only. Their route should be inside the particular locality and up to the next auto or bus stand. The same system is maintained in Kolkata.

a) Traffic jam has always been an issue in Agartala. Bikers, rickshaws and sometimes auto-rickshaws are the main culprits in this regard. Even the smaller jams become bigger ones when they poke themselves into minor gaps recklessly. Traffic police should notice and handle the matter carefully. Moreover there should be traffic post/both at every important places like Lalbahadur club-Powerhouse crossing, Women’s college-Town hall crossing etc. to make the traffic smoothen.

A city is not smart until it manages its waste well. Waste management process should be decentralised and locality based, quick and real time. It is surprising to note that 70% of waste is organic in nature & can be reprocessed before it becomes waste or, thereafter, can be recycled in a sustainable manner. I would like to draw your attention to urgent need to reform the current municipal system. Under the current system corruption is rampant, and the welfare schemes are abused by corrupt politicians and officials. There is poor planning and even poorer implementation of rules and regulations. I request your good offices to take urgent attention of rampant corruption, official apathy at municipal level to improve the working condition of Indian citizens. Jai Hind

Our civic bodies do not have a single urban planner. In cities like London, chief urban planner is the second most important official after the mayor. That is the importance given to planning," .If a city has to really become world class , the first thing is to get experts from various disciplines, including urban planners, architects, transportation planners, financial managers and environmental engineers.

The city of Agartala requires to ensure basic infrastructure services to enable a decent quality of life in urban pockets and a clean and sustainable environment and adoption of smart solutions and providing more public spaces to poor. It may be implemented through areas based approach consisting of retrofitting, re-development, pan city initiatives. There is also need of hours to develop and adopt a model code for development of new cities Pan India for continuous pace of Smart Development.
